Panthers center Austin Corbett, focused on his duties during practices, recently overheard quarterback Bryce Young’s voice breaking through the pre-snap noise. Young was heard saying, “Jaycee, you’re cooked right here,” a phrase directed at cornerback Jaycee Horn. This exchange highlighted an evolving dynamic within the team.

Young, often perceived as reserved in public appearances, has shown a different side in practice sessions. His interactions with Horn have added a competitive and lively atmosphere to the Panthers’ offseason program. Horn acknowledged this change: “I know from his interviews you might think he’s a robot or some s—, but he’s human, man.”

Horn appreciates the competitiveness and energy these exchanges bring to practices. He noted that when he gets Young to engage in banter, it raises the energy level for both offense and defense. “Whenever I get him talking back to me a lot, I know I got him,” Horn said.

Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton also participates in these exchanges. Dalton explained his role in fostering competition: “I’m the first one that is out there talking to Jaycee every single day.” He believes such interactions contribute to players feeling comfortable enough to express their personalities.

The impact of this spirited environment extends beyond just Young and Horn. Veteran safety Nick Scott observed that their interactions set an example for the entire team by demonstrating dedication and intensity during practice sessions.

Dalton has witnessed Young’s growth since joining as a free agent in 2023. He noted how Young’s confidence increased over time as he became more familiar with his teammates and system: “Another year in a system… allows you to fully let your personality show.”

Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu recalled Young motivating the team during a crucial game last season against Atlanta: “‘We don’t have to talk about last year… We’ve got one more opportunity to fix it.'” This speech resonated with Ekwonu and showcased another side of Young’s leadership.

Rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan recognized Young’s competitive nature from their high school encounters. McMillan stated that while off-field Young is humble, on-field he embodies fierce competitiveness: “He’s one of the biggest competitors I know.”

Outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum emphasized that playing at Alabama requires inherent competitiveness: “You don’t play at Alabama and do what he did without having that dog in you.” Running back Chuba Hubbard echoed similar sentiments regarding Young’s latent competitiveness.

Horn enjoys sparring verbally with Young during practice sessions. When called “Checkdown Charlie” by Horn, Young responded by challenging Horn’s defensive tactics: “You afraid to press somebody?” These exchanges underscore both players’ competitive spirits.

Overall, this internal competition among Panthers players like Bryce Young and Jaycee Horn seems beneficial for building camaraderie while pushing each other toward success on the field.
