Charlotte FC has announced the departure of defender Souleyman Doumbia after exercising a buyout on the remainder of his loan for 2025.
“We wish Souleyman nothing but the best in his future endeavors,” said General Manager Zoran Krneta. “Souleyman played a key part in our successes when he was on the field this year, but unfortunately injuries kept him off the field and didn’t allow him to reach his full potential with us in Charlotte.”
According to Major League Soccer roster regulations, clubs are permitted to buy out up to two players under guaranteed contracts each year at their own expense, which also allows them to free up salary budget space.
Doumbia, aged 28, joined Charlotte FC from Standard Liège on a one-year loan deal in March. He became a regular starter and appeared in 11 matches, providing two assists over 603 minutes played. However, he suffered three separate injuries during his time with the club, with the most recent sidelining him since July 26.
