Charlotte FC faced a challenging evening at home as they succumbed to a 4-1 defeat against Chicago Fire. This match marked Chicago’s return home after four consecutive away games, and they capitalized on their opportunities effectively.
The opening goal came from Jonathan Bamba, whose shot took a slight deflection off Adilson Malanda’s head, sending the ball past Kristijan Kahlina just before halftime. Charlotte struggled to create significant chances in response.
Chicago extended their lead with two quick goals by Brian Gutiérrez and Philip Zinckernagel in the 60th and 64th minutes, respectively. These strikes left Charlotte trailing by three goals.
Despite the deficit, Charlotte showed resilience when Patrick Agyemang combined with Eryk Williamson to score his third goal of the season in the 70th minute. Shortly afterward, Pep Biel had two opportunities to narrow the gap further but was unsuccessful.
Controversy arose when Kerwin Vargas appeared to be fouled without receiving a call, which led to a penalty for Chicago on the other end. Andrew Gutman fell in the box after minimal contact, resulting in Chicago’s fourth goal and sealing their victory.
This result marks Charlotte’s fifth consecutive loss, leaving head coach Dean Smith dissatisfied with his team’s performance at home. With upcoming matches including the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 against D.C. United and a league game against Columbus Crew, Charlotte needs to quickly regroup before embarking on another series of road games through June.
