When it was time for the linebackers to have their pictures taken during production day, veteran Josey Jewell gathered them all together. This act of solidarity extends beyond photographs, as Jewell is also helping newcomer Christian Rozeboom settle into his new role on the field and in Charlotte.
Both hailing from Iowa, Jewell and Rozeboom have much in common. Rozeboom recently moved into a house near Jewell’s in the suburbs. After spending last year with the Los Angeles Rams, Rozeboom is adjusting to many changes.
“I think what’s nice is, wherever you are at, you find your way around,” Rozeboom said. He expressed excitement about being in a smaller city like Charlotte where fans are engaged. “But I’m excited to be in a smaller city, just feel more connected to the city and everything like that.”
Rozeboom admitted he initially stayed in a center city hotel but has since settled into a home with his wife. As he acclimates to his surroundings, he’s also stepping into a new situation with the Panthers.
With Shaq Thompson gone after two injury-plagued years, the Panthers’ inside linebacker group now includes Jewell, Rozeboom, and second-year player Trevin Wallace. All three have starting experience which should benefit a defense undergoing significant changes this offseason.
Rozeboom joined the team as part of an early wave of free agency that included linemen Tershawn Wharton and Bobby Brown III and safety Tre’von Moehrig. Last season with the Rams, Rozeboom started 11 games and achieved career-high statistics indicating potential beyond special teams.
“I don’t know if it’s like this everywhere,” Rozeboom noted about joining new teams as a veteran player but stated he felt welcomed by his teammates. “The guys all seem like they’re on board with what it takes to win.”
Rozeboom appreciates having diverse teammates who bring different elements to the team both personally and professionally. “I think each guy…comes from wherever it may be, and they come together…and it’s just kind of cool to see those bonds.”
