Derrick Brown leads resilient Panthers defense past Rams

Derrick Brown played a key role in the Carolina Panthers’ 31-28 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, leading a defensive effort that disrupted one of the league’s top offenses. The Panthers entered the game missing three starters and were considered underdogs against a Rams team led by quarterback Matthew Stafford, who had not thrown an interception in his previous 317 passes.

“Being honest, nobody gave us a chance to beat these guys after Monday night. We lost Jaycee Horn and Tre’von Moehrig. I mean, we lost a lot of pieces of the defense,” Derrick Brown said about the team’s mindset heading into the matchup.

Despite these challenges, Brown emphasized the team’s determination: “It just shows the resilience of this team and being able to come in this week and say, screw everything, we got an opportunity to go out here and play a really good team.”

Brown made two significant plays during the game. In the first quarter, he deflected a pass from Stafford with his face mask, leading to an interception by Nick Scott that ended Stafford’s touchdown streak. This play also gave Brown sole possession of first place for most batted passes by a defensive lineman this season.

Coach Dave Canales praised Brown’s leadership: “There’s a resilience and depth of character with Derrick where he’s not concerned with what’s happening on the other side of the ball…you’re going to get the same Derrick Brown, regardless whatever the score is; we’re up, we’re down, you’re going to get the same Derrick Brown…”

The Panthers’ defense continued its strong performance when Mike Jackson intercepted Stafford for a touchdown on their next drive. Rookie Lathan Ransom contributed as well with 11 tackles and one sack in his first start.

Brown credited his teammates for their contributions: “I wouldn’t say we got in his head…we just made plays when it was needed…Lathan Ransom coming down on those run plays, stop that stuff. I mean, it’s been a lot of people that made a lot of plays today.”

He also highlighted the selfless culture within the team: “I don’t care who does it, how it looks, and as long as it gets done…this is the most selfless team I’ve been a part of.”

Late in the fourth quarter with Carolina holding onto a three-point lead and Los Angeles threatening to tie or take back control, Brown sacked Stafford and forced a fumble recovered by D.J. Wonnum. This turnover allowed Carolina’s offense to run out the clock after Bryce Young completed an important third-down pass.

A’Shawn Robinson summed up what many felt after Brown’s decisive play: “Once it happened, I said ball game.”

Reflecting on overcoming adversity throughout this season so far—after starting 1-3—Brown stated: “Nobody gave us a shot all week…for us to be able to sit in here and be able to have that resilience…just to come to work every single day and put our best foot forward…”

The Panthers now enter their bye week before returning for four games that could determine their postseason fate.
