Hunter Renfrow, the 29-year-old Clemson legend and former Pro Bowler, is set to make his return to football after a year-long hiatus due to health challenges. On Monday, Renfrow stepped into Bank of America Stadium with a sense of gratitude for a fresh opportunity that bears resemblance to his early days as a walk-on at Clemson in 2014.

Renfrow, who caught a game-winning touchdown in the 2016 national championship game and won the Burlsworth Trophy in 2018, took a break from playing last season. His absence was felt, as it coincided with what could have been his peak physical years. This break was necessitated by a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, an autoimmune condition that severely impacted his health.

He recounted the impact of his condition, stating, “It kicked my butt pretty good.” Renfrow described experiencing weight fluctuations, dropping down to 150 pounds, and enduring consecutive days of high fevers. These symptoms made it difficult to perform as an athlete.

After a year focused on treatment and recovery, Renfrow is now preparing for his comeback. “I’ve done this before,” he remarked with a laugh, reflecting on the time he signed a blank page during his early days at Clemson.

Having regained his health, Renfrow is eager to return to the field. He quipped about his current weight fluctuations, joking about indulging in snacks like Oreos. With renewed vigor, Renfrow expressed his desire to reconnect with the game he loves and the community he missed.

“I’m from the Carolinas,” Renfrow said, emphasizing his personal connection to the region. After stints elsewhere, including with the Raiders, his return to the Carolinas holds particular significance for him. He’s motivated by the familiar environment and the opportunity to play near family.

Renfrow recognizes the competitive nature of his current team, with the Carolina Panthers boasting a strong lineup of wide receivers. Despite this, he is unfazed and eager to embrace the challenge. He views this new chapter as a chance to be a supportive teammate and contribute positively to the team culture.

Grateful for another shot at the sport, Renfrow remains focused on maintaining his health and making a meaningful comeback. “I feel like I have a new opportunity,” he said, prepared to work hard and seize this chance.
