The draft weekend party for Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker last year defied typical expectations. Unlike most draft parties celebrating a player’s selection, Coker’s event was not tied directly to his hearing his name called. The party, held at his parents’ home in Sterling, Virginia, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, carried on despite Coker not being drafted through the seven rounds.
“I think it helped,” Coker said, reflecting on the event that ultimately spearheaded his NFL career when the Panthers picked him as a free agent. “Getting picked up after still had the same effect. I mean, I’m still going to play in the NFL.”
The determined crowd of family, friends, and supporters was unperturbed by the draft results. The presence of community spirit made Coker feel embraced long before the Panthers called with an offer.
His mother, Jenny Coker, organized the event, including a variety of food and drinks, amid expectations of potential NFL team selections. “I was so amazed at how many people wanted to be a part of this with him. It was incredible,” she said.
Highlighting the event were contributions like a mobile bar with three signature cocktails created by Coker’s former coach. “It was just such a wonderful gift of self,” Jenny remarked.
Despite the unexpected rain that moved more of the celebration indoors, the gathering maintained its exuberance. Even after it became apparent that Coker wouldn’t be drafted, hope remained thick in the air. “I knew that it was going to be a possibility that I didn’t get picked,” Coker stated, expressing his confidence to play professionally.
As the redraft rounds ended, multiple teams contacted Coker. After discussing with his agent, he opted to join the Carolina Panthers as a free agent. “We made a great choice,” he declared, after assessing the situation.
By the end of the night, updated with his new team, the party atmosphere reached a new high. The following day, Coker and some friends returned for cleanup activities, completing a memorable weekend.
Coker shared advice for other players facing the draft: “Be prepared to not get picked up and just be ready to work whenever you get here.”
Reflecting a year later on the untraditional start to his NFL journey, Coker expressed contentment. “The whole weekend was awesome,” he said, recounting the draft party void of a draft experience. “I wouldn’t change a thing.”
