Rookie safety Lathan Ransom continued to make an impression during the Carolina Panthers’ training camp in Charlotte. On Tuesday, Ransom, a fourth-round draft pick, intercepted a pass intended for veteran receiver Adam Thielen. After the interception, he was joined by teammates Nick Scott and Chau Smith-Wade in a celebration that included a dance and choreographed handshakes.
Head coach Dave Canales commented on Ransom’s performance: “Just being where he’s supposed to be,” Canales replied when asked what stood out in a practice that also included a sack and a pass breakup. “One thing that I’m noticing about him is he always seems to be in great position to make a play.
“And that comes with study, that comes with being disciplined about owning your leverage, analyzing the formation, run-pass, and then putting yourselves in an athletic position to make plays. And I can’t be happier with where he’s at and where he’s headed.”
Ransom is competing for playing time in the secondary alongside Demani Richardson and Nick Scott. His recent performances suggest he could play an important role on special teams as well.
