CHARLOTTE — Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik humorously recounted an incident involving rookie tight end Mitchell Evans, who inadvertently created an inside joke among his team during a recent practice. “Ask him about his team breakdown,” Idzik said with a laugh.
Evans, a product of Notre Dame, explained that he ended the huddle instinctively in the manner he was accustomed to from college: “I didn’t think it was anything abnormal,” Evans stated. However, this led to some confusion as his teammates were not familiar with his approach. “So, that was on me,” Evans admitted.
Despite this minor mishap, Evans has quickly made an impression on the Panthers’ coaching staff and players. His willingness to engage with teammates and coaches has been noted alongside his performance on the field. Dave Canales highlighted Evans’ versatility: “What carries over from the film is just a really versatile guy.”
During his time at Notre Dame, Evans recorded 72 receptions for 843 yards and four touchdowns over two years. He now brings those skills to Charlotte and finds the Panthers’ playbook well-suited to his abilities. “I think we’re very versatile,” Evans remarked about the offense.
Evans also brings experience as a former high school quarterback, which occasionally came into play at Notre Dame for specific situations. During minicamp drills, he impressed by being the only participant to hit the target in a QB accuracy net drill. Canales commented on this: “We’re excited about Mitch; he’s a fantastic athlete.”
While focusing on developing as a tight end for now, Evans remains open to contributing in various ways if needed by the team. “I’m going to let the coaches do their own thing…and help the team any way I can,” he assured.
