As Nick Emmanwori navigated the early NFL draft process, he encountered a familiar refrain during his 18 formal meetings. Teams appreciated his game tape and physical attributes but questioned his speed.
Emmanwori confidently addressed these concerns following his pro day in Columbia in March, stating, “Had 18 formal meetings and every one was kind of like, they were happy with my tape, happy with my size. They were questioning my speed. And I just had to tell them, wait till the combine and I had to show them.”
During the combine, the South Carolina safety demonstrated his speed by completing the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds. Emmanwori, not boasting but assured, remarked, “Going into it, I knew it was gonna happen.” His performance captured the attention of many, solidifying his status as a combine favorite. Yet, his football skills on tape ensured continued interest. In his senior season, Emmanwori earned first-team All-American honors, leading his team with 88 tackles and contributing crucial interceptions.
State’s Pro day was an opportunity for Emmanwori to display his versatility further. “That was my main focus to come out here and show the scouts I can move,” he noted. His history of dedication and persistence allowed him to impress, a mentality evident as he repeatedly improved drill performances.
With only a single Power Five offer from the Gamecocks out of high school, Emmanwori’s journey has been defined by perseverance and seizing opportunities. Reflecting on his path, he shared, “Oh man, that’s been my whole story of my life, man. South Carolina is my only Power Five offer coming up, so I mean what a better story how it played out.”
Now, viewed as a potential first-round pick, Emmanwori hopes to hear his name called, especially by the Carolina Panthers. “The Panthers, man, they got a huge impact on us down here,” Emmanwori mentioned, acknowledging the team’s interest in gathering talent from his college.
