Tyrone Poole, a member of the original Carolina Panthers team, has been named to the Black College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026. Poole played college football at Fort Valley State before being selected by the Panthers as one of their three first-round picks in the 1995 NFL Draft. He was drafted between quarterback Kerry Collins and left tackle Blake Brockermeyer.

During his time with Carolina, Poole started 44 games over three seasons before being traded to the Indianapolis Colts. His professional career spanned 12 years in the NFL, where he also played for the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, and Tennessee Titans. He recorded 18 career interceptions and won two Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots, including one against his former team in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Poole joins other Panthers alumni Richard Huntley (Winston-Salem State), Nate Newton (Florida A&M), and Greg Lloyd (Fort Valley State) who are already members of the Hall. The six-person class also includes Jimmy Smith (Jackson State), Eddie Robinson Jr. (Alabama State), Nick Collins (Bethune-Cookman), coach Rudy Hubbard (Florida A&M), and broadcaster Steve Wyche (Howard).

Black College Football Hall of Fame co-founder Doug Williams said: “What we have with the Class of 2026 is an incredible showcase of excellence, leadership, and impact that continues to come from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. When the Black College Hall of Fame was established, its purpose was to elevate and recognize the past, present, and future of Black College Football. This class exemplifies that mission.”

The induction ceremony will take place on June 6, 2026 in Atlanta. The inductees will also be recognized during halftime at the Fifth Annual Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl on February 21, 2026 at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans; this event will air live on NFL Network.

The Carolina Panthers began play as an expansion franchise in Charlotte in 1995 and compete in the NFC South division. Over their history they have secured multiple division titles and playoff appearances and reached a Super Bowl. The organization maintains a presence throughout North and South Carolina and is based in Charlotte.
