The Carolina Panthers are set to make a new draft pick in tonight’s event, but the focus for the team’s decision-makers, including Dan Morgan, Brandt Tilis, and Dave Canales, remains on a long-term strategic vision for the team’s future well beyond the immediate spectacle.

Dave Canales emphasized, “We have to be really disciplined; Dan, Brandt, myself looking for players and adding players of value for this year, and for the future.” Canales explained that success requires the identification and development of players as part of a disciplined team-building process.

The Panthers have begun implementing this strategy since Canales, Morgan, and Tilis joined the team earlier in January. With 70 players currently on the roster, only 17 are signed through 2027 or beyond. This gives the team financial flexibility, an essential component until a robust roster is established.

Three major player extensions have been completed under Morgan’s leadership, keeping key players like Derrick Brown, Chuba Hubbard, and Jaycee Horn. Morgan remarked, “We want to reward the guys that we draft. So, obviously, we have to draft well, and hopefully, we’ll pay those guys, and I hope that happens. I hope we’re paying players for years to come because that means we’re drafting well and pinpointing the right guys.”

The team aims to strengthen their defensive line, a priority highlighted by last season’s record for points allowed. Morgan has focused on improving the line’s depth, augmented by recent free-agent signings. “I think we all saw our defense; it wasn’t good enough last year, so we’ve been addressing that this offseason in free agency, and we’ll continue to do that during the draft as well,” noted Morgan.

Draft strategies are being adopted with longer-term visions in mind, as seen in last year’s late-round trade for wide receiver Xavier Legette. Canales highlighted the importance of evaluating character through interactions with prospects, explaining, “At the end of the day, we have to make decisions, whether it’s in free agency or in the draft, to evaluate the talent first and foremost, but then to get to know these people, these humans, to see if they fit into our culture.”

Morgan remains committed to enhancing both offensive and defensive lines through strategic signings and retooling. “You can never be satisfied. You’ve always got to be hungry and always looking for ways to be innovative and getting better,” he stressed.

As the process unfolds, the Panthers’ management is resolute in maintaining a balance between immediate team improvements and long-term objectives. “But then when we have our bigger talks we have to say today and then also project smart moves and all those strategic moves that help you for a long time,” Canales reflected. Such a committed approach aims to secure the Panthers’ potency well into the future.
