The Carolina Panthers have focused on rebuilding their defense and maintaining offensive consistency during the first week of organized team activities (OTAs). Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero emphasized the importance of physicality in their new approach. “We certainly know we need to play better up front; I need to coach better up front,” Evero stated. He praised newcomer Tershawn Wharton for his presence and versatility, noting his significant postseason experience with the Chiefs.
Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik highlighted consistency as a key factor in his second year with the team. Idzik expressed satisfaction with quarterback Bryce Young’s progress, stating, “We’re not teaching him what vocabulary is; it’s teaching him the whys.” Young also acknowledged the benefits of building on last year’s foundation.
Idzik pointed out that the offensive line has retained its core group, allowing for continuity and healthy competition among players like Austin Corbett and Cade Mays at center. Head coach Dave Canales commented on this stability: “We brought everybody back in the offensive line room.”
Special teams coordinator Tracy Smith is overseeing a kicking competition between veteran Matthew Wright and rookie Ryan Fitzgerald. Smith remarked on their work ethic and differing skill sets, stating, “It’s two guys who are working really hard.”
As the Panthers prepare for mandatory minicamp, these developments indicate a focus on improvement and stability across various positions.
