The Carolina Panthers are focusing on enhancing competition within their wide receiver group, according to recent statements from team members. Veteran receiver Adam Thielen acknowledged the increased competitive environment since his arrival and emphasized its importance for improving performance.

“I say this; competition brings the best out of everybody,” Thielen said. He added that having multiple players vying for positions encourages even veteran players to elevate their game.

Coach Dave Canales and General Manager Dan Morgan have prioritized fostering competition throughout the team’s roster since assuming their roles in early 2024. This strategy was evident during free agency, the draft, and when signing undrafted free agents.

“Our goal for every position group is to create that competition all the way through the depth chart,” Canales explained at rookie minicamp. The team’s efforts began with drafting Tetairoa McMillan from Arizona as the No. 8 overall pick in April after he recorded over 1,300 yards in consecutive seasons with the Wildcats.

Despite expectations that Carolina would focus on defense with a Top 10 pick, Thielen expressed no surprise at McMillan’s selection given his availability. “You want to bring in high-quality football players to help this team win games,” he stated.

McMillan’s impressive statistics include ranking third in FBS yards in 2024 and gaining recognition for contested catches. Thielen praised McMillan’s versatility: “He’s a big long receiver that has phenomenal body control.”

Canales is managing expectations for McMillan by advising him to focus on incremental improvement rather than immediate pressure as WR1. “My expectation for him is to just get one day better,” Canales said regarding McMillan’s integration into the team.

The Panthers’ organized team activities (OTAs) are set to begin soon, marking a shift from individual drills towards more structured competition among receivers. With an expanded group of twelve receivers including notable first-round picks and experienced players, final roster spots will be highly competitive throughout the offseason.

Thielen views this increased competition positively: “I’m excited to see what that does to this room…it’s just going to elevate the level of play in everyone’s game.”
