The Carolina Panthers recently partnered with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to host a unique goat yoga session at Bank of America Stadium. This event, featuring 25 goats and six Panthers players, aimed to raise awareness about mental health.
Linebacker Trevin Wallace, who owns two goats himself, felt comfortable with the animals. “I’m from the country, so you got remember that,” he said. The participating players included Chuba Hubbard, Tommy Tremble, Tershawn Wharton, Chandler Zavala, and Ikem Ekwonu. Teammates Bryce Young, Robert Hunt, and Derrick Brown also attended to show support.
Blue Cross NC’s initiative focuses on improving youth mental well-being across North Carolina by investing in prevention and expanding access to care. Dr. Marcus Wallace, Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross NC stated: “We recognize how critical mental health resources are to help manage daily stressors before they become crises.”
The goat yoga session was designed not only for physical relaxation but also as a means of building team chemistry. As Hubbard remarked: “You take things like this for granted at times… We all getting closer.”
For athletes under constant pressure, finding peace of mind is crucial. Wallace emphasized spending time with family while Hubbard practices meditation and openness with loved ones. Wharton shared his experience: “I do yoga of course… taking those mental breaks to talk to family.”
This collaboration between the Panthers and Blue Cross NC seeks to normalize conversations about mental health among athletes and the wider community. Wharton noted: “It’s serious… letting them know that even though we’re doing things and having fun we also still go through those battles.” Wallace added: “It’s really important to talk about mental health because at the end of the day, everybody struggles.”
