Dan Morgan, general manager of the Carolina Panthers, attended the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis with a sense of familiarity. Having experienced the event as a player, scout, and now executive, Morgan reflected on his growth in the role. The Panthers have shown progress over recent seasons, increasing their win totals and recently securing their first division title in ten years and first playoff appearance in eight years.

Morgan compared his current comfort level to when he started as GM alongside head coach Dave Canales. “I think like the first time you do it, everything’s new, right? Everybody’s in your face at the podium. It’s kind of overwhelming a little bit, so I think the longer you’re in it, the more you get used to it, the more you get comfortable, and you start just kind of settling into the position,” Morgan said. He added that continuous learning is part of his approach: “I’m always going to be trying to learn, always trying to get better with everything I do…just always trying to get better.”

The Panthers’ leadership group—including Morgan, Canales, and executive vice president Brandt Tilis—has focused on building alignment within their organization. Canales described this process: “Just learning who we are as an organization, learning our players, learning our staff members…and where we’re headed culturally and philosophically.” He emphasized ongoing adaptation: “Every year we have to restart and say…we’ve got to recreate what we believe in again with this new group.”

This philosophy has influenced recent decisions within the team. For example, Canales has delegated play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Brad Idzik while collaborating closely with associate head coach Darrell Bevell and run game coordinator Harold Goodwin during preparations for next season.

Canales explained how integrating ideas from other coaching backgrounds helps refine their offense: “Part of all of us being here at the combine together just meeting during the day is…to see what are some of the things operationally…that we might be able to add.” He cited influences from coaches like Mike McDaniel and Kyle Shanahan.

Both Morgan and Canales highlighted a culture rooted in service and support for players and staff. Addressing support systems following personal tragedies among players or staff injuries, Morgan stated: “That’s the advantage I have being GM of the Panthers…I understand what they’re going through. I’m here for them…there’s always going to be resources.”

Canales also spoke about fostering humility among coaches by referencing an encounter with Giants head coach John Harbaugh: “It was just he was serving…being able to just give your best to those around you that I really respect and try to emulate.”

Tilis remains central in decision-making processes alongside Morgan and Canales. As Canales noted: “Any of these conversations I have to include Brandt because this is a group where…we’re committed to each other and supporting each other.”

The team’s leadership has not hesitated when making significant roster moves or free agent acquisitions while maintaining discipline. As Morgan put it: “We’re aligned in the building. We have a plan…That doesn’t mean we’re not going to be aggressive and take swings but…we’re going to be smart.”

The Carolina Panthers continue striving for success both on and off the field by emphasizing organizational unity while engaging fans across North Carolina and South Carolina through community outreach programs official website.
