The Carolina Panthers are entering their bye week with seven wins and four games remaining in the regular season. The team is currently half a game behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South, with two matchups against the Bucs scheduled in the final three weeks. This upcoming stretch will be crucial for Carolina’s playoff hopes, as they have not qualified for the postseason since 2017.
Quarterback Bryce Young has experienced both highs and lows this season. He has managed games effectively at times, such as during a win over Green Bay, and also set a franchise record by passing for 448 yards against Atlanta. In a recent win over the Rams, Young demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure by leading his 11th career game-winning drive, making him the youngest player in NFL history to reach that milestone.
“Sometimes those game-winning drives mean letting Rico Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard take over. Sometimes, they mean getting the ball spotted for Ryan Fitzgerald. Sometimes they mean making huge throws. Regardless of the circumstances, they all require a calm quarterback in a rotating huddle,” according to team sources.
Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan has emerged as one of Young’s top targets and leads all rookie pass-catchers in the league with 826 receiving yards. He is also tied for fourth in “Big” plays (receptions of 20 or more yards) and ranks among league leaders in touchdowns and first down conversions. Jalen Coker has contributed significantly since returning from injury, including catching a touchdown on fourth down against the Rams.
“It was the culmination of what Canales has been preaching for the past month: that for this offense to really hit its stride, the coaching staff needed to get Coker more involved,” team representatives stated.
On defense, Derrick Brown has made an impact after missing last season due to injury. His leadership is credited with improving overall defensive performance from last year’s historically low ranking to middle-of-the-pack status this season. Brown leads all defensive linemen with seven batted passes and had a key strip sack against Matthew Stafford of the Rams.
“So much of that, from coaches to the locker room, has been attributed to Brown. He has demanded more of his team in practices, during halftimes, on the sideline, and they have answered his call,” according to Panthers staff.
Rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald has delivered multiple game-winning field goals under varying conditions throughout this season—against Dallas, Green Bay at Lambeau Field, and Atlanta—giving confidence to both teammates and coaches heading into critical late-season games.
“But Fitzgerald has handled them all with an ease that has given his team complete confidence,” according to those close to team operations.
Carolina’s remaining schedule includes two games versus Tampa Bay along with matchups against Seattle and New Orleans as they aim for their first playoff appearance since 2017.
