Austin Corbett is set to return to practice for the Carolina Panthers after being placed on injured reserve following a left knee injury in Week 2. Head coach Dave Canales confirmed that Corbett’s 21-day window to practice will open on Wednesday, allowing coaches to evaluate his physical readiness.
“His window will open this week to see where he’s at physically and again this is proving that we can handle the physical load, from a football standpoint,” Canales said.
Corbett reflected on his rehabilitation process, stating, “We’ve kind of monitored over these last couple of weeks, making sure and letting all that kind of take care of itself, body do its thing and it’s been a good four weeks. Progressed really well to be able to open the window and you know we can only do so much on the side of practice. When we have a 200 pound strength coach whatever trying to push against me, can only take you so far, right?”
This marks Corbett’s third time undergoing surgery and rehab for his left knee since an ACL tear in 2022 and an MCL strain in 2023. The most recent injury was a less severe MCL re-injury.
“Much shorter time and rehab that I’m used to,” Corbett joked.
Corbett acknowledged that returning to full contact would be an important step: “Actually hitting a strength coach and hitting Derrick Brown are two different things. So seeing how the body responds from that, we’ll take it. I don’t know how my body is going to do, right? Previous surgeries in there, everything’s looked good, everything’s progressed great at least four weeks, weight room’s doing great. Like everything’s fine, right, but get out there and play football and see what happens from there and then evaluate.”
The Panthers offense has recently recorded back-to-back games with over 400 yards gained. Additional players could also return soon; Jalen Coker (quad) began practicing last week after starting the season on IR but was not ready for the previous game. Canales commented on Coker’s status: “Well, he’s really close. He looks great. We’ll give you the full report on Wednesday, but you know, this week is going to be a big week for him, to really prove physically, to prove that he can do it and handle the load that we’re expecting.”
Running back Chuba Hubbard may also return after missing two games with a calf injury. In his absence, Rico Dowdle has produced consecutive games with more than 200 yards from scrimmage. Before his injury this season Hubbard had 53 carries for 217 yards (4.1 yards per carry). Having both Hubbard and Dowdle available would reunite two rushers who each surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in the previous season.
Quarterback Bryce Young expressed confidence about their potential return: “I’m super confident… The great thing is those are two guys that want to win. Chuba is a leader on this team. He’s huge for us… Rico does a great job of doing all the things you’ve seen… We want to win… they’re always—they’re close, they’re always supporting each other… whatever it takes for us to win.”
Tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders may also be cleared soon along with defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton (toe), who has missed two games.
Canales praised Dowdle’s performance—highlighted by his franchise record of 239 scrimmage yards—and recalled past recommendations about him: “He said a guy we need to take a look at is Rico Dowdle… He’s aggressive, he’s smart… He’s an aggressive runner… And all the things you love in a teammate and a player.”
Looking ahead at road challenges—the Panthers have lost all three away games this year—Canales said he is reviewing every aspect of travel logistics with vice president of football operations Jeff Brown as well as input from veteran coaches like Jim Caldwell and Dom Capers.
“I think it’s important for the Panthers to show that we can take this on the road and play good football… This is a big deal for us… I’m scrutinizing all of it just to try to find an edge,” Canales stated.
He added: “It’s not always the same… What worked for us in Seattle doesn’t necessarily work for us in Tampa… I’m trying to find that mix so I can do my part…”
Regarding defensive strategy during Sunday’s game against Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens late in the fourth quarter—cornerback Jaycee Horn requested coverage responsibilities—a move which Canales supported: “I love that about Jaycee… But Jaycee… love the competitiveness… he’s got that pit bull mentality.”
Canales emphasized player ownership within team decisions: “I want feedback from the players… If something is yours… make sure that it’s successful… As I see that ownership happening throughout this group… I love that type of ownership because they are the ones out there at the end of the day on the field…”
