The Carolina Panthers will be without tight end Tommy Tremble for the remainder of organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp following his recent back surgery. Head coach Dave Canales stated that the aim is for Tremble to begin rehabilitation during training camp, which would allow him to be ready for the regular season.

“Tommy did have surgery on his back last week, a successful surgery,” Canales said Tuesday. “We were kind of thinking about it, talking about it, looking at timelines and all that, and just felt like for him to give him the (time). He’s 25 years old. You know, let’s get this thing while he’s young and strong and be able to just get back on the right track.”

Tremble experienced back issues last season, causing him to miss some games. Despite these challenges, he became a more reliable part of the passing game in the latter half of the season as quarterback Bryce Young found his rhythm. Tremble ended the year with 234 receiving yards over 12 games.

He notably caught Young’s no-look touchdown pass in Atlanta during the season finale, which boosted Young’s confidence in their continued collaboration upon Tremble’s return.

“He was huge, he’s going to continue to be huge,” Young said Tuesday. “Tommy is a super hard worker, someone who brings so much intensity and ferocity to the position, to the team, to us as a group, as a unit.”

Tremble recently signed a two-year contract extension with the Panthers after being drafted in 2021.

In other injury news from Tuesday’s voluntary session: outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum was sidelined due to back issues; wide receiver Jalen Coker is recovering from soft-tissue problems; defensive tackle Derrick Brown participated partially as he recovers from a knee issue; and veteran right tackle Taylor Moton worked out separately.

“He’s feeling great though,” Canales said regarding Brown. “And he’s feeling more and more confident with the change of direction, body on body, you know, getting some weight-bearing type of things that way.”

Canales noted that all players are progressing well without setbacks and are making daily improvements.
