CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers are in the midst of their training camp, focusing on developing new talent and strengthening team dynamics. Rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan is receiving guidance from cornerback Jaycee Horn, known for his Pro Bowl-level coverage skills. Head Coach Dave Canales emphasizes the importance of such competition in practice, stating, “Position to position, the guys you go against in practice is how we become us.”
McMillan was drafted eighth overall and has shown promise with impressive catches during camp. However, his encounter with Horn highlighted areas for improvement. Canales noted that this experience would help McMillan refine his skills against strong opponents.
On the offensive line, Cade Mays and Austin Corbett are competing for the center position. Both have experience starting games last season, and Canales plans to alternate them throughout camp to evaluate chemistry with quarterback Bryce Young.
Tight end Tommy Tremble is continuing his rehabilitation after back surgery in May. Although he is not yet ready to return to full practice, he remains active in conditioning work.
Rookie outside linebacker Princely Umanmielen received attention for an attempted strip-sack of Young but was exonerated after reviewing film. Canales used this as a teaching moment for the team.
The Panthers’ run defense is currently missing key players Derrick Brown and Bobby Brown due to personal reasons and injury, respectively. Despite these absences, the team continues to build depth with additions like Turk Wharton and Cam Jackson.
Veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen has offered to assist with holding duties if needed, demonstrating his versatility and willingness to contribute wherever possible.
In kicking competitions, rookie Ryan Fitzgerald matched veteran Matthew’s performance from the previous day. The absence of punter Sam Martin has led Andy Dalton to step in as holder during practices.
Kickoff return auditions are ongoing with several players being evaluated under new rules requiring more personnel on returns.
