Princely Umanmielen, a recent addition to the Carolina Panthers, shared insights into his approach as a pass rusher. He described his style as “sexy,” highlighting his finesse and footwork rather than relying solely on power. This distinct technique caught the attention of Panthers’ general manager Dan Morgan and coach Dave Canales during the draft process.
Morgan and Canales expressed surprise at having Umanmielen available alongside Tetairoa McMillan and Nic Scourton in the early rounds of the draft. Now adjusting to the NFL’s pace, Umanmielen explained that he must act quickly without overthinking due to the speed of play.
Umanmielen had an impressive college career with 136 tackles, 40 for loss, 25.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and one touchdown recovery. As he transitions to professional football, he’s learning from veterans D.J. Wonnum and Patrick Jones II. The Panthers are looking to improve their defensive line after finishing with one of the league’s lowest sack counts last season.
The team’s defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero emphasizes dynamic edge rushers in his scheme, which aligns well with Umanmielen’s skills. “I think this defense…gives us a lot of freedom to get after the quarterback,” said Umanmielen.
As practices continue without full contact, Umanmielen is eager for regular-season games where he can demonstrate his abilities fully equipped in pads. Reflecting on being drafted in the third round, he aims to prove his worth and achieve significant success with Carolina.
“I was a little hot that I was sitting until the third round,” he admitted but remains motivated by this experience.
