Princely Umanmielen, a promising NFL newcomer, is focused on achieving his goals. After returning to college for one last season and securing 10.5 sacks at Ole Miss, Umanmielen now aims to make a significant impact in the NFL.
His first financial priority with his NFL paycheck is straightforward: “A deposit for an apartment or a house,” he stated during the recent rookie minicamp. At this camp, his primary objective was to familiarize himself with the team’s defensive strategies. “Just probably getting a little bit of the knowledge of the defense right now,” he mentioned after practice.
Drafted by the Carolina Panthers as their third-round pick (No. 77 overall), Umanmielen has set ambitious targets for his rookie year. He expressed his aspirations saying, “Of course, I want to do things like get double-digit sacks and get defensive Rookie of the Year.”
Umanmielen draws inspiration from renowned players Ray Lewis and Tyrann Mathieu for their relentless play styles. His own tenacity has been evident throughout his college career; he led Florida’s Gators in tackles for loss over two years and achieved notable statistics at Ole Miss.
Dan Morgan, general manager of the Panthers, praised Umanmielen’s progress: “He got better and better as a pass rusher… He’s got a wicked spin move.” Morgan highlighted Umanmielen’s ability to adapt and improve continually.
Playing under Ejiro Evero’s defense presents an opportunity that excites Umanmielen. He believes it will allow him to influence games effectively both in run defense and pass coverage.
Reflecting on reaching this stage of his career, Umanmielen shared his sentiments about joining the NFL: “It felt great, a little surreal… It just felt good to finally put on an NFL practice jersey and helmet.”
