Luke Kuechly, known for his dedication during his time with the Carolina Panthers, was seen preparing diligently at Bank of America Stadium on Friday night. The former All-Pro linebacker was set to throw out the first pitch as the Savannah Bananas brought their unique brand of baseball to Charlotte.
The Bananas are known for their interactive style, blending traditional baseball with theatrics and fan participation. They faced off against their rivals, the Party Animals, in what promised to be a memorable event. Due to high demand, an extra night was added to their Charlotte stop, drawing an estimated 150,000 fans over the weekend.
Kuechly practiced multiple times before the game and admitted feeling slightly nervous despite claiming otherwise. As he waited with fellow former Panthers Jonathan Stewart and Greg Olsen, fans eagerly sought autographs from both football legends and Banana players alike.
Eric Jones Jr., a player for the Bananas and a Charlotte native, expressed excitement about playing in front of family and friends at a stadium filled with cherished memories. Jones grew up supporting the Panthers and hoped for more games in Charlotte.
Jones also met Kuechly for the first time before taking part in Friday’s game. “I just got to meet (Luke),” he shared excitedly after their interaction.
When it came time for Kuechly’s pitch, he received a warm welcome from fans. Despite noting that his throw was “a little high,” he enjoyed being part of such a lively event.
Greg Olsen joined Jackson Olsen on the field during one inning after meeting him when rain altered practice plans earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Stewart took center stage as he participated as a pinch runner later in the game.
The Savannah Bananas aim to make baseball enjoyable by creating engaging experiences combining sportsmanship with entertainment—a concept well-received by attendees this weekend who relished seeing past Panthers stars alongside Banana Ball antics.
