Christ Episcopal Church issued the following announcement June 4.
Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race
The author writes, “Waking Up White is the book I wish someone had handed me years ago. My hope is that by sharing my sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions, I offer a fresh perspective on bias, stereotypes, manners, and tolerance. As I unpack my own long-held beliefs about colorblindness, being a good person, and wanting to help people of color, I reveal how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated my ill-conceived ideas about race.”
During the month of July, we invite you to read the book along with others at Christ Church. You might finish it in one sitting, or you can digest it slowly, inviting each chapter to settle into you. It is up to you!
When you register, you will receive a reading guide (via email) during the first week of July. In addition, two small groups will be offered (via Zoom) to discuss and learn from each other. Choices of dates and times for small groups are: Tuesdays, July 7 - 21, 10:30 - 11:30 AM; or Thursdays, July 9 - 23, 6:30 - 7:30 PM. If you register for a group, we will email you the Zoom link and password at the end of June.
