Queens University of Charlotte issued the following announcement on Sept. 14.
As the U.S. Women's National Team returns to training, USA Field Hockey announced that Bessant Field, part of the Queens University of Charlotte Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park, will serve as their new temporary training facility.
USA Field Hockey, Bank of America Vice Chair, Global Strategy and USA Field Hockey Board of Directors Chair, Catherine P. Bessant and Queens University of Charlotte President, Daniel G. Lugo officially welcomed the team to Charlotte on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
"After a year-long search for a training facility for the U.S. Women's National Team, Bessant Field provided the perfect location," said Simon Hoskins, USA Field Hockey's executive director. "We are tremendously grateful to Queens University, Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte and the state of North Carolina for this partnership."
The Queens Sports Complex, one of the largest athletic venues in the region, offers a world-class multi-sport turf championship field, indoor training amenities, athletic training facilities, 13-court tennis center, 14,000 square foot conference center and more. In addition, Bessant Field offers Charlotte's only water-based turf facility, a field hockey training requirement.
"Queens University is thrilled to have the U.S. Women's National Field Hockey Team choose our Sports Complex as their official training facility," Lugo said. "As home to the NCAA program, in addition to the Myers Park High School team and Charlotte Ambush Field Hockey Club, our vision to create a centralized complex for all players of all abilities to utilize is being achieved."
The U.S. Women's National Team is a centralized program, comprised of 20 full-time athletes and 10 alternate NCAA Division I field hockey players. Team training has begun ahead of the 2022 Pan American Cup, an FIH Hockey World Cup qualifier, taking place in Santiago, Chile from Jan. 20 – 30. The team is also participating in the third season of the FIH Hockey Pro League, beginning Oct. 6.
"Field Hockey is an incredible sport and growing across the country and in this region," added Bessant. "USA Field Hockey, as our national governing body under the umbrella of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, is so proud to be headquartering our U.S. Women's National Team in North Carolina. This is a great win for our state and the city of Charlotte and is yet another example of the dynamism of our region. Having world-class coaches and athletes in our community will add to that vibrancy and inspire all of us."
