University of North Carolina-Charlotte Athletics issued the following announcement on Oct. 22.
Just over two weeks prior to the start of its 2021-22 campaign, the Charlotte men's basketball team will suit up for the first time in uniform when it takes on Georgia in an exhibition contest on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff from Halton Arena is slated for 3 p.m. ET.
Fans can follow Sunday's action through live stats provided by Sidearm that can be found here, or by listening to ESPN 730 The Game to hear Matt Swierad and Trevor Wilt describing the action.
Proceeds from Sunday's contest will benefit the Jamil Niner Student Pantry. Donations to the organization that provides food to those Charlotte students who struggle with food insecurity can be made here.
THE BASICS
Sunday's game will be an unconventional rematch of an exhibition matchup that led into the 2019-20 season. That day, the Anthony Edwards led, Georgia Bulldogs, knocked off the 49ers, 77-69, inside Halton Arena. On the hardwood, the Bulldogs and 49ers have yet to meet in a competitive contest, despite squaring off in a pair of exhibitions over the last three seasons.
SCOUTING GEORGIA
Georgia arrives in the Queen City with a largely new look team, compared to the squad that finished 2020-21, 7-11 in the SEC. Each of UGA's top six scorers from last season are no longer with the program entering the new season. The Bulldogs will look to the experience of a set of five graduate transfers that will provide an immediate spark to the program. Of those, is sixth-year super senior, Aaron Cook who moved to Athens, after playing critical minutes last season at national runner-up, Gonzaga.
A NEW LOOK SQUAD IN CLT
Charlotte returns just over 50 percent of its team scoring from last season (811 points), with 694 (85.6 percent) of those points coming from juniors, Jahmir Young and Brice Williams. The Niners roster features six scholarship newcomers this season that include graduate transfers, Austin Butler, Clyde Trapp Jr. and Perry Francois, juniors Musa Jallow and Robert Braswell IV and lone freshman, Daylen Berry.
MIR EARNS PRESEASON ALL-C-USA HONORS
Junior Jahmir Young added another All-C-USA honor to his belt this week, earning a spot on the All-Conference USA Preseason team with 10 other student-athletes from around the conference. The 2021 All-Conference First Team honoree, finished last year with a team-leading 18.0 points per game—a mark that also ranked fourth in the league—while starting in all 25 contests for the Niners last season.
UP NEXT
Following Sunday's exhibition, Charlotte will get 16 days of prep, before officially opening its 2021-22 season at home against Monmouth on Nov. 9. The opening tap for that contest is slated for 7 p.m. at Halton Arena.
