Central Piedmont Community College recently issued the following annoucement.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 10-11:00 A.M. - MORE EVENTS TO FOLLOW, CONTINUE READING FOR DETAILS

Veterans Day is Thursday, November 11. In honor of our military veterans and family members, Central Piedmont’s Military Families and Veterans Services will host a Veterans Week. Learn about overcoming inequalities and increasing equity through success stories and personal experiences from retired military officials who are employed in the field of veteran services and education. You will also have an opportunity to add value and success toward your academic journey.

The Veterans Week of events are as follows. 

VETERANS FLAG CEREMONY 

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2021, 10-11 A.M. — QUAD, CENTRAL CAMPUS

Gather on the Central Campus Quad as we honor our veterans in a flag ceremony that reflects love for our country through commitment of service. Richard Bartell, director of Military Family and Veteran Services, will provide opening remarks.

VIRTUAL HANGOUT HONORING VETERANS

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2-3 P.M. — VIA GOOGLE MEET 

Join us as we honor our veteran students by celebrating who they are as a veteran in this virtual event.

Moderators for the event are: 

  • Tari Ham, Military Families and Veterans Services counselor
  • Tracy Threatt, Military Families and Veterans Services counselor
  • Amy Oyos-Yatrofsky, Military Families and Veterans Services academic advisor/counseling intern

STUDENT VETERANS ASSOCIATION FUN RUN/WALK

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 8-9:30 A.M. — OVERCASH CIRCLE, CENTRAL CAMPUS

Join us in the Overcash Circle on Central Campus. Run or walk at your own pace at this event sponsored by the Student Veterans Association Chairperson Zachary Colburn, who is an academic advisor for Military Families and Veterans Services. 

VIRTUAL VETERANS DAY TALK: HONORING AMERICAN VETERANS 

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 3-4 P.M. — VIA GOOGLE MEET

Join us for an engaging conversation in honor of the outstanding and admirable military veterans who have dedicated their lives to serving our country. 

TOPICS AND SPEAKERS

  • Introductions: Richard Bartell, director of Military Families and Veterans Services 
  • Opening Remarks: Dr. Tracy Moore, associate vice president, Military Families and Veterans Services 
  • Remarks: Daytona Hill, retired SMSgt, U.S. Air force
    • Daytona will share with students her personal experience on how extraordinary it is being a woman veteran. She will also highlight Central Piedmont's Women Veterans Association and how important it is for women veterans to get involved. Daytona served in the United States Air Forces for more than 28 years. After retiring from the military, she became a full-time student at Central Piedmont, where she obtained two degrees and is currently employed in Academic Operations at the college.  
  • Remarks: Solar Power Partnership, Jamila Freelain, MPA, Career Technical Education coordinator, Industry Partnerships and Alumni Relations, Harper Campus, and Theresa Cogar, director of Risk Management at Pure Power
    • Jamila and Theresa will talk about the Solar Power Partnership, a veteran training initiative between Central Piedmont and Pure Power to train veterans in the solar energy industry. Students will train at Central Piedmont in our construction trades program and employment opportunities will be guided by the partnership with on-the-job-training and full-time employment opportunities. 
  • Guest Speaker: Scott Garlow, retired U.S. Navy Officer and director of Veterans Services for Mecklenburg County
    • Scott will talk about what it means to serve veterans and their families in Mecklenburg County. Scott provides oversight and direction advocating on behalf of the county's veterans and their families. Prior to joining Mecklenburg County government, he worked in education for local agencies in North and South Carolina.

VETERANS AFFAIRS BENEFITS AND LEGAL AID WORKSHOP SERIES

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, NOON-1 P.M.

Come learn about the benefits that are available to veterans and their families, legal issues commonly faced, and the services Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy offers. Guest speaker Emon Northe is one of our partnered attorneys and project managers for the Veterans Legal Services Project — Family Support and Health Care program for the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy. This session is part of a semester-long virtual workshop series with Central Piedmont's Single Stop office in partnership with the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy, focused on a variety of legal topics taught by legal professionals.
