University of North Carolina Charlotte Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 18.
The Charlotte men's soccer team saw its season end in a 1-0 loss to Georgia State in a highly emotional and tightly contested battle in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in front of over 1,000 fans at Transamerica Field on Thursday evening (Nov. 18).
Georgia State (13-6-0) scored midway through the opening frame and was able to ride out the remaining 65 minutes for the victory over the Niners (10-6-1) in a rematch of the first round of the 2018 edition of the NCAA Tournament.
"It was a very frustrating night for us," head coach Kevin Langan said after the match. "We should've been 2-0 up before they had their first shot on goal and they scored, so well done to them, and then the rest of the game was us chasing it with them sitting deep and trying to counter."
Charlotte's first chance of the match was its best chance of the night as Kameron Lacey found Axel Sigurdarson in front of goal with a cross but Sigurdarson wasn't able to get a good boot to it.
The 49ers kept the pressure on early, totaling four shots in the opening 12 minutes and forcing a Panther yellow card.
Georgia State weathered the early storm from the Green and Gold and it paid dividends as George Proctor got his toe on a delivery from a free kick for the contest's only tally.
Charlotte forced the Panther keeper to make one more save in the opening 45 but couldn't tickle the twine and ended the half down a goal.
The Niners' attack kept the ball in Georgia State's end in the second half and forced five corners for the Green and Gold to the Panthers' one. Despite the heavy pressure, it took until the 87th minute for Charlotte to register another shot when Alessandro Negri narrowly missed from range.
Georgia State used counterattacks to outshoot the Niners 8-2 in the second half and held on to pick up the Panthers' first NCAA Tournament win in program history.
