Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department issued the following announcement on Dec. 9.
In 1971, a homeless man named Larry Dean Stewart walked into a diner and ordered food. The owner of the diner knew Larry would not be able to pay for his meal, so the owner walked by Larry’s table and pretended to pick up a $20 bill on the floor. Handing the $20 to Larry, the owner asked if he had dropped it.
Larry went on to become very wealthy. In his wealth, he never forgot the kindness the owner of the small diner had shown him. He decided to give the generosity back by secretly giving away money to strangers in need each Christmas.
When Larry died, he passed his mission to someone else who has started chapters of Secret Santas in cities across the US. And yes, there’s one in Charlotte.
Today, we were honored to join these anonymous donors who call themselves “Santa’s Elves” and bless veterans, school teachers, daycare workers and many other people along the way.
