University of North Carolina-Charlotte Athletics issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.
The Charlotte women's tennis team released its 2022 spring schedule Friday afternoon (Dec. 10). The 49ers have 13 matches on their home court in head coach Anthony Davison's fourth year at the helm.
OPENING IT UP
In back-to-back seasons, the Niners' spring campaign begins in Greenville, South Carolina on January 8-9 at the Furman Invitational. A home-opening weekend awaits the Green and Gold upon their return to Charlotte as they host Appalachian State and Charleston Southern the following Sunday. Continuing the home stretch, Tennessee comes to the Queen City on January 21st, with in-state foes Elon and Campbell visiting town the following day.
STIFF COMPETITION
Seven of the Niners' opponents made appearances in the NCAA Tournament last season. North Carolina trounced its way to a 30-1 record with its sole loss coming in the semifinals to Pepperdine. The Tar Heel duo of Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty claimed the national championship in the doubles bracket while Scotty and Fiona Crawley were tabbed the top doubles team nationally in the December 8th ITA rankings and four members of the 2021-22 UNC squad claimed top-20 spots in singles rankings. North Florida, Old Dominion, and Tennessee reached the second round of the national tournament while Furman, James Madison, and Xavier fell in opening round matches.
HEADING NORTH
The Niners visit Dartmouth for matches against the Big Green and Boston College on February 5-6. This marks the northernmost competition in Charlotte women's tennis history. Dartmouth, a member of the Ivy League, has not completed a spring season since an uncharacteristic 2018-19 campaign that saw the Big Green finish the season 4-19. Boston College did compete last season but struggled in the shortened schedule, dropping 11 of its13 Atlantic Coast Conference matches.
CONFERENCE ACTION
The first conference match of the season commences in Denton, Texas as the Niners do battle with host North Texas as well as Rice. On April 9th, the 49ers will take on UAB at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex in their lone home Conference USA match. The regular season concludes at Old Dominion on April 17th following a non-league stop two days prior at VCU. The Monarchs boast the third-best doubles team in the nation in the pair of Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Yulia Starodubtseva. The Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournament is set for April 21-24 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Last season, Charlotte entered the conference tournament as the fourth-seeded squad and defeated Louisiana Tech in the first round.
RANKED NINERS
Charlotte has three members ranked in the latest ITA rankings on December 8. Junior Margaux Maquet is ranked 43rd in singles action for the program's highest-ever singles ranking while the duo of Lucia Quiterio and Ruxi Schech come in at No. 54 in the doubles rankings, the second-highest doubles ranking in program history.
