Charlotte City Council approved using $2 million in federal funding

Money 02

City of Charlotte issued the following announcement on Dec. 17.

The Charlotte City Council on Monday approved using $2 million in federal funding to partner with Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region and rehabilitate more than 100 homes owned by low- and moderate-income homeowners.

Rehabilitating the single-family homes will take place over a two-year period as part of Habitat’s Critical Home Repair program. Repairs will focus on heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing, electrical and roofing systems, and safety improvements to flooring and stairs, and the installation of ramps.

Habitat has played a significant role in the city’s housing rehabilitation strategy, as the need for rehabilitation outpaces the city’s ability to respond to every request. Over the last 12 years, the city and Habitat have developed a strong partnership to address the needs of low-income homeowners, and increase the impact of the city's investments by leveraging private donations and volunteer labor. To date, the City of Charlotte and Habitat have partnered on the repair of more than 600 homes.

This partnership will be funded through annual Community Development Block Grants provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
