University of North Carolina-Charlotte Athletics issued the following announcement on Dec. 18.
A career-high-tying 27 points from junior Jahmir Young, along with an explosive, 17 second half points from senior Clyde Trapp wasn't quite enough as the Charlotte men's basketball team fell to Wake Forest at the buzzer, 82-79, on Friday at the Spectrum Center.
The loss dropped Charlotte to an even 5-5 on the year, while Wake continues its impressive open to the 2021-22 campaign, improving to 11-1.
Young's 27 points came on 12-of-21 shooting and his 13th and 14th points of the night made him the 29th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
The Upper Marlboro, Maryland native also ripped down nine rebounds and dished out four assists with just one turnover.
Trapp's 17 second half points propelled the Niners—who trailed by as many as 19—to a late run that eventually led to a tie ball game with less than 30 seconds to play. Trapp was six-of-seven from the field, with five rebounds, a block and a steal with a second half +/- of +13.
The third Niner in double-figures was freshman Aly Khalifa who dropped in 10 points, pulled in four rebounds and tallied a pair of assists.
Junior Robert Braswell finished with nine points with numerous first half buckets that kept CLT in it, despite Wake Forest shooting over 70 percent from the field in the opening frame.
Seniors Austin Butler and Marvin Cannon rounded out the scoring with eight points apiece.
The opening half was largely dominated by the Demon Deacons who opened up a lead as large as 19 points with less than four minutes to play in the half.
A late, 9-4 run by the Green & White sent the Niners into the locker room facing a 14-point, 48-34, deficit.
Out of the break, Charlotte immediately cut the Wake lead to eight with a 6-0 run that saw buckets from its three-headed back court monster of Butler, Trapp and Young.
Over the course of the half, Charlotte slowly chipped away at the Wake Forest lead, eventually using a momentum-shifting 16-5 run capped off by Trapp's final 3-pointer of the evening with less than 30 seconds to play that tied things up at 79.
On the final possession, Wake's Alondes Williams—who finished with a game-high 34 points—drove to the basket as time expired and kicked it to an open Isaiah Mucius in the corner who knocked down the game-winning bucket at the buzzer.
MIR ENTERS ELITE STATUS, KEEPS BAG ON HIM
Jahmir Young's 27 points placed him in 29th on Charlotte's all-time points list with 1,014 career points, while also marking his seventh game with 20 or more points and fourth with 25-plus. Young is still one of just seven players in Conference USA who has scored in double-figures in every game played for his team.
TRAPP FINDS FOOTING IN SECOND HALF
Clyde Trapp's second-half outburst was spearheaded on the defensive end where he made life difficult for Williams, forcing a number of missed shots on key possessions late in the night's proceedings.
