University of North Carolina Charlotte issued the following announcement on Feb. 24.
Alumna Brittany Myer ’15 and students Quinton Frederick and Eliza Cassar were among the five prize winners in the inaugural Metal Building Manufacturers Association Student Design Competition.
The contest challenged undergraduate and graduate students to create an innovative metal building design for a one- or two-story elementary school housing approximately 200 students.
Myer, in graduate school at the University of New Mexico, earned the first-place prize of $5,000; Frederick received the $1,500 third-place prize; Cassar received a $500 merit award. Student William Pak was a finalist.
Frederick, Cassar and Pak are third-year students. Prior to the contest’s December deadline, the fall 2021 third-year studio, “Introduction to structural technology and skin/enclosure,” was organized with the competition in mind. Faculty mentors for the winning projects also were recognized: Josie Holden-Bulla (Frederick), Peter Wong (Cassar) and David Thaddeus (Pak).
