Fast Five with Brent Cagle

Fast five brent cagle

Which part of the organization do you lead?

I am an assistant city manager with responsibility over Finance, Strategy & Budget, Human Resources, General Services, Solid Waste Services and Aviation departments. In addition, I am the staff lead for the Intergovernmental Affairs and Budget and Governance committees and I represent the City Manager's Office at the Privatization and Competition Advisory Committee citizens committee.

Why did you decide to work for the City of Charlotte?

I have spent my entire career in the public sector and ten years ago when I came to Charlotte it was to pursue career advancement at the Aviation department. I moved here from Phoenix, AZ, and I also wanted to move to Charlotte because I like all the great things that the city and region has to offer. I know that growth has brought many challenges to the city, but overall, Charlotte and the region is a wonderful place to live.

What is the biggest organizational priority you're working on right now?

There are many, but right now the budget is a top priority. With COVID-19 and inflation we know that employees have been negatively impacted so a budget priority of the City Manager's Office will be to focus on employee compensation and benefits. I feel a personal obligation to focus on our employees because they have done such great work through a very tough couple of years and I believe that our organization is outstanding because of their hard work and dedication. I am also working with the Human Resources department on employee development and training programs that will allow all employees to access opportunities to increase their skills and have opportunities to advance within the city. I believe that compensation and workforce development play a major part in the city's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and I want to do my part to keep the city's focus on creating opportunities for everyone.

What is your favorite part about working for the City of Charlotte?

There are a lot of things, but the top pick for me, is the fact that everyone in the city is always willing to "step-up" to help each other and the community. For example, the men and women of the Solid Waste Services department always impress me. Anytime they are asked to help with a problem, they never say "it's not my job" they always say, "how can we help?" I think that kind of teamwork and willingness to help each other is something that makes Charlotte unique and as a result, such a great place to work and live.

What is your favorite restaurant in Charlotte?

Another tough question because I have so many, but, right now I have to say Hello Sailor at Lake Norman. I know its technically in Cornelius but it's amazing to have a world class restaurant with beautiful views of the lake so close to uptown Charlotte.
