The Charlotte 49ers men's golf team begins play in the NCAA New Haven Regional on Monday morning marking the second-straight team appearance in postseason play. The Niners, ranked #31 in the country, will be represented in their 17th-straight regional including individual qualifiers.
"It's been a good year," began C-USA's Coach of the Year Ryan Cabbage. "We're looking forward to continuing building on that. I think it's ok to celebrate that success up to this point, but these guys know there are bigger goals and bigger things to accomplish over the next couple of weeks starting with Yale. Anytime you go to a NCAA Regional, you know you're going to have to play well. These are all quality teams. Our focus will be to go play well and trust that our good golf is good enough to do the job. I truly believe that, our guys truly believe that and now we go to work on being the best we can be this week."
NEW HAVEN LINEUP
Dongjin Park, Matt Sharpstene, Ben Woodruff, Carson Ownbey and Conor Gough will open as the five-man team in New Haven. Trey Tobias will also travel as an alternate competitor if needed.
TITLE TOWN
Charlotte scored a total of four team titles during the 2021-22 season including three in the spring, most recently capturing the Conference USA Championship two weeks ago. The first team title came in the fall during the River Run Collegiate followed by spring victories at the Desert Intercollegiate, Irish Creek Intercollegiate and in Texarkana during the annual league tournament.
Sharpstene took home the first individual medalist honor of the year winning at River Run while Woodruff scored his win at the Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Springs. Woodruff had to hold off Sharpstene by two shots to win in California. Park racked up five top-10 finishes, three in the top-five, earning a pair of runner-up finishes at the Nexus Collegiate and Irish Creek.
Cabbage on the Spring's Start
We weren't great after the first two events of the spring season. We had a meeting, talked about some things that could help us get back on track and the timing of that win in Palm Springs was big for us. That was certainly a turning point for us coming off of that adversity.
Cabbage's Thoughts on the C-USA Tournament
"We felt very comfortable with our chances to win, but we knew we were going to have to play well. We weren't very sharp in stroke play. We knew the quality and depth of teams in our conference, we were going to have our work cut out for us. Once we got into match play, I think we had a little bit of a reset and those guys went out there and played very well."
