Tami B. Simmons, JCSU’s vice president for Institutional Advancement, is slated to speak on a four-person panel discussing nonprofit best practices this week.

The panel is presented by PNC Institutional Asset Management and will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Mint Museum, located at 2730 Randolph Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.

Simmons has a long history in the nonprofit world. Before coming to Johnson C. Smith University, Simmons worked for the philanthropic foundations at Wachovia and, later, Wells Fargo. She also spent time as the Board Director for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and was a member of the JCSU Board of Trustees.

She knew she wanted to use her master’s degree in Higher Education, and continue to work in the nonprofit sector. So, when she moved on from Susan G. Komen, she found herself fulfilling her goals at JCSU.

“I think small HBCUs have their own unique challenges,” she said. “We don’t always have money for marketing or print media, so we have to be doubly creative to figure out how to get the message about our programs and student experience out there. These are some of the points I’m looking forward to talking about on the panel.”

Simmons will be joined by Jenni Gaisbuer, executive director of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation; Will Jones, president and CEO of Thompson Child and Family Focus; and Henri Cancio-Fitzgerald, managing director of Nonprofit Solutions, PNC Endowment and Foundation.
