During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Charlotte Fire commits to raising awareness about the life-saving importance of early screening. We honor all those lost to this disease and celebrate the courageous survivors and advocates fighting to beat it.
More than a decade ago, Charlotte Fire unveiled the “Pink Lady.” The eye-catching apparatus serves a dual role: It is a working fire truck used as a reserve apparatus throughout the city, and a visible reminder to the public for awareness, prevention, early detection, and a vigilant reminder to all who see her regarding the fight against cancer.
Breast cancer is the second most common form of the disease among women in the United States. One in eight women will be diagnosed in their lifetimes, including an expected 290,000 just this year.
