On Monday, the Charlotte City Council voted to sell a city-owned building on Central Avenue to Starmount Healthcare Management, allowing Starmount to develop a new behavior health facility for children and adolescents in east Charlotte.

The facility is a much-needed health care resource for the area, as well as an opportunity to create local, good-paying jobs. It is expected to create 124 total jobs, including 95 full-time positions. Under its agreement with the City of Charlotte, Starmount also committed to establishing a paid internship and training program that will hire 10 interns per year.

“This project is another step forward in revitalizing the east side which is extremely important to me,” said Marjorie Molina - Charlotte City Council, District 5. “We have been working for a long, long time to make progress in east Charlotte, and there has been a lot of talk about what could be done, but we're finally starting to see real progress as ideas become reality.”

The city had originally planned to consolidate its Innovation & Technology staff on the site, but a significant investment would have been required to make the building suitable for this purpose. Starmount contacted the city desiring to acquire the property. The building was sold for $2.76 million.
