From March 9, 2023 post.

With the continued rise in vehicle thefts involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Metro Division is continuing its effort to help curb this trend.

This Saturday, March 11, 2023, the CMPD’s Metro Division is hosting a FREE steering wheel lock giveaway from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church West at 1801 Oaklawn Avenue, Charlotte. The event is FREE, however, to be eligible for the steering wheel lock giveaway, you need to be a resident of the City of Charlotte and own a Hyundai or Kia vehicle. Supplies are limited.

The CMPD continues to work hard to address this issue in our community. We are grateful to be able to distribute the steering wheel locks, donated by Hyundai. The locks can be utilized on all Hyundai vehicles and some Kia models. The locks will aid in the continued efforts to halt the nationwide trend of auto-thefts impacting these cars.

In addition to the auto-theft prevention tips provided, Hyundai and Kia dealers are offering free anti-theft software updates for owners of affected models to prevent thefts. Check with your local dealer for details.

Here are a few simple auto-theft prevention tips to help you avoid being a victim:

• Lock your doors

• Store your valuables out of sight or remove them from your vehicle

• Park in well-it areas or areas with surveillance
