CHARLOTTE — The one constant in the NFL is change, and being prepared for it is essential. Shaq Thompson understands this well.

The veteran linebacker is about to face another version of a new team around him. Having experienced numerous transitions in recent years, he knows what to expect and how to remain central to the team's efforts.

"It's been a business, you know what I mean? That's just what business is about," Thompson said. "You've got brothers leave, and you get new brothers, and you just got to create that atmosphere, that mindset."

At 30 years old, Thompson is trusted to call signals on defense and serves as a leader in the locker room. Defensive tackle Derrick Brown emphasized Thompson's influence: "He's our captain; when he speaks, his voice is heard."

Thompson has earned respect through his play and knowledge. He has seen many changes since joining the team as a rookie on a Super Bowl squad with legends like Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis. As those players left, Thompson adapted by forming bonds with new teammates.

"I think the first time was a little tougher because somebody that you came in with...you know what I mean?" he said regarding Kuechly and Davis leaving. "But the second time still hurt...Those are my guys."

Last year, after breaking his ankle in Week 2, Thompson continued sharing his experience from the sidelines. Now he's building new partnerships with players like Josey Jewell and Jadeveon Clowney.

"I think one thing about me is I could kind of connect with every and anybody," Thompson said about quickly forming bonds with new teammates.

Jewell praised Thompson's openness: "I walked in the door, and he was like, what's up man? How's it going? And that's pretty cool."

Despite being aware of his own uncertain future—being 30 years old and in the last year of his contract—Thompson remains motivated by both personal goals and team success.

"I got five left in me," he stated confidently. Brown concurred: "I think he's doing even better...he's still got a lot of wisdom for the game."

Thompson acknowledges that change is inevitable but feels blessed for his decade-long career: "You've got to have a short-term memory in this game; you've got to have a strong heart and strong mind."

He laughed as he concluded: "I don't know if I'm doing something right or something wrong. You know what I mean?"
