CHARLOTTE — The Panthers have added a quarterback to the roster as they prepare for four consecutive days of practice ahead of their first pre-season game. The team signed quarterback Jake Luton, who was with the Panthers in 2023. In a corresponding move, the club placed defensive end Kemoko Turay on reserve/injured.

Luton was initially drafted by the Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent time on the Panthers' practice squad twice in 2023 and dressed for Week 3 against the Seahawks as Andy Dalton's backup.

The addition follows an injury to Andy Dalton, who suffered a quad injury earlier this week. Dalton did not practice during Thursday night's Fan Fest in Clemson, South Carolina. Dave Canales mentioned at that time that the club would look to bring in another quarterback "for the time being while we don't have Andy."

Luton will join starter Bryce Young and rookie Jack Plummer. Plummer stepped in for Dalton during Thursday night's scrimmage, providing coaches with an opportunity to evaluate the Louisville quarterback further.

"It was good for Jack Plummer to get out there to get those reps," Canales said. "Started off that first possession, missed a couple of open guys just high. Part of the jitters. It's so good to just see him work through that, settle himself and start making plays."

The Panthers are back on the practice field this afternoon and will have one more practice on Tuesday before heading to New England for their first pre-season game against the Patriots.
