August 12, 2024 – Charlotte Hornets President of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson announced today the team has finalized its health and performance staff under Dr. Trent Salo, Charlotte’s new Vice President of Player Health and Performance. Salo’s staff will continue to partner with the team’s official healthcare provider, Novant Health, and its team of physicians and medical infrastructure. The investment in the new health and performance staff demonstrates ownership’s commitment towards enhancing the team’s basketball operations.
The Hornets hired Dr. Matthew Tuttle as Director of Sports Medicine and Bryce Daub as Director of Athletic Performance, in addition to promoting Dr. Quinton Sawyer to Head Athletic Trainer. Charlotte also brought on Pete Elliott as Associate Head Athletic Trainer, Dr. Rachel Webb as Director of Performance Psychology and Wellness, and Anthony Barry as Head Athletic Performance Coach. Also joining Salo’s staff are Dr. Harrison Herman as Head of Rehabilitation, Dr. Oluremi Famodu-Jackson as Performance Dietitian, Dr. Cassidy Papa as Physical Therapist, and Dr. Harjiv Singh as Senior Performance and Development Scientist.
Salo joins the Hornets after seven years with the Detroit Pistons, including the last two as Senior Director of Athletic Performance. He began his career in the NBA in 2017 as a strength and conditioning coach for the Grand Rapids Drive.
Prior to the NBA, Salo served at Calvin University where he ran the Human Performance Laboratory and consulted with the men’s basketball team. He graduated from Calvin with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and exercise science, holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of Kentucky, a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine, and is working toward a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Copenhagen.
Tuttle holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Le Moyne College and a Doctor of Physical Therapy from SUNY Upstate Medical University; he is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy from Central Queensland University. His experience includes roles with North Carolina FC, NC Courage, Denver Nuggets, New York Red Bulls.
Daub comes to Charlotte after nine years at the University of Oklahoma's men’s basketball program. His postgraduate career began with an internship at Seattle SuperSonics followed by positions at Oklahoma City Thunder and University of Oregon.
Sawyer spent six years as Associate Head Athletic Trainer for Hornets following roles at Phoenix Suns and Michigan State University among others.
Elliott received degrees from University of Vermont and LIU Brooklyn before working at Cleveland State University, Brooklyn Nets among others prior to joining Memphis Grizzlies for three seasons.
Webb joins after four years at University Arizona having started her career there in 2019 before promotion; previously she interned for Chicago Bulls.
Barry brings experience shaped by collegiate athletics background holding degrees from Merrimack College; previous roles include Pistons' G League affiliate Los Angeles Lakers.
Herman served three seasons with Pistons prior stints include Nets Hospital Special Surgery Sports Rehabilitation Center bringing eight years clinical experience holding multiple degrees including Doctor Physical Therapy master anatomy clinical health science bachelor exercise science concentration exercise physiology dual-certified physical therapist athletic trainer board-certified specialist orthopedic sports physical therapy ABPTS certified strength conditioning specialist NSCA
