Major League Soccer (MLS) announced today the roster construction models chosen by each of its 29 clubs for the remainder of the 2024 season. This decision follows roster rule enhancements revealed on July 18, which provide clubs with increased flexibility and creative control over discretionary fund allocation.
Clubs had until the close of the Secondary Transfer Window on August 14 to declare their model preference: either the Designated Player Model or the U22 Initiative Player Model. Nineteen clubs selected the Designated Player Model, while ten opted for the U22 Initiative Player Model.
The Designated Player Model permits up to three Designated Player spots and three U22 Initiative slots per club. Conversely, the U22 Initiative Player Model allows clubs to exchange one Designated Player slot for a fourth U22 Initiative slot and up to an additional $2 million in General Allocation Money. Due to midseason implementation, clubs choosing this model will receive up to $1 million in General Allocation Money in 2024.
