The Panthers have bolstered their offensive line depth ahead of Saturday's second preseason game by signing guard Ike Boettger. To accommodate Boettger on the roster, the team waived rookie linebacker Jackson Mitchell.
Boettger, 29, initially joined the NFL as an undrafted rookie from Iowa in 2018 with the Buffalo Bills. His career has included stints with the Bills, Chiefs, and Colts. Most recently, he was part of the Lions' camp until earlier this week. Over his career, Boettger has appeared in 36 games and made 17 starts.
The Panthers faced a need for additional support on their offensive line due to injuries and limited healthy players. They had only seven other healthy non-starting offensive linemen available for Saturday's game against the Jets. This situation arose after claiming Mason Brooks off waivers on Thursday and dealing with injuries to two active linemen during last week's game in New England.
Injuries to Chandler Zavala, Cade Mays, Badara Traore, and Yosh Nijman further strained their resources, prompting the decision to sign Boettger.
