CHARLOTTE — The Panthers are evaluating their defensive lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season. Several young defensive backs made notable contributions during Saturday night's 15-12 loss to the New York Jets.

Rookie safety Demani Richardson, who has had a strong training camp, recorded an interception in the third quarter that led to a field goal. This follows his two interceptions in practice earlier this week, earning him recognition from teammates and coaches. "He's playing at one of the deeper positions on the roster," noted an observer, referring to Richardson's position behind several veterans.

Cornerback Lamar Jackson also contributed with a pass breakup in the end zone. With Dane Jackson sidelined due to a hamstring injury, the Panthers are searching for someone to start opposite Jaycee Horn. Candidates include Lamar Jackson, D'Shawn Jamison, Dicaprio Bootle, and rookie Chau Smith-Wade.

Running back Dillon Johnson scored the first touchdown of the preseason just before halftime and finished with 18 carries for 83 yards. Only two running backs were active for the game.

The second defensive front showed promise again on Saturday. Defensive lineman T.J. Smith recorded another sack as he vies for a spot in the rotation. Rookie outside linebacker Derrick McLendon lost what would have been an impressive sack due to a defensive holding penalty against Lamar Jackson.

Linebacker Tae Davis left the field with a foot injury and did not return. Davis, a veteran special teamer who joined mid-season last year, was competing for a roster spot.

The Panthers activated nine offensive linemen for this game, up from seven last week when injuries reduced their numbers further during play. Guard Chandler Zavala dressed despite concerns about his hamstring injury sustained during Thursday's joint practice. Coach Dave Canales expressed relief that Zavala could participate pregame.

Tyler Smith started at left tackle, Jack Anderson at left guard, Andrew Raym at center, Mason Brooks at right guard, and Ricky Lee at right tackle. Jeremiah Crawford took over right tackle duties in the second half while Lee moved to left tackle. Ike Boettger entered as left guard in the third quarter after being signed on Friday.

New kickoff rules implemented by the league remain under scrutiny as teams adjust. Eddy Piñeiro's initial kickoff was returned 19 yards to the 29-yard line but subsequent kicks resulted in significant returns setting up Jets' scoring opportunities.

Missed tackles on special teams also allowed a punt return of 31 yards late in the game leading to another Jets' field goal indicating areas needing improvement ahead of regular season play.
