Panthers head coach Dave Canales did not provide updates on the quarterback situation during a press conference on Monday. He emphasized the need to address issues observed in Sunday's loss to the Broncos, regardless of which player would be under center. Canales stated they are waiting a few days to decide whether injured Andy Dalton will be available or if Bryce Young will start again.
"These are really important days, the next few, really getting all the way out there to Wednesday to play some live snaps and to do that," Canales said. "So I'll give you guys more information about that, but we really have to look at Andy, where he's at, and in the next couple of days to make a sound decision."
Canales highlighted "the pre-snap operation" as an area needing improvement. The Panthers incurred two delay-of-game penalties and used a timeout due to untimely substitutions by coaches.
"I think it just comes back to continuing to push the urgency and practice," Canales said. "So just making sure that we're being really strict about that and getting our protections, getting the alignment... And, of course, this young group of receivers that we have just continuing to push the urgency of getting lined up."
The Panthers have faced numerous changes with different quarterbacks playing and missing key players like Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen. Canales focused on correcting errors.
"The timeout we took was a substitution confusion," he said. "So the staff, we're taking that one just in terms of the guys that we wanted to have out there."
Communication is crucial both off and on-field. Brady Christensen acknowledged its importance given changes in personnel including losing their starting center.
"It's a work in progress, always," Christensen said. "And then up front... It starts with everyone."
Cornerback Jaycee Horn was involved in an emotional exchange towards the end of Sunday's game against Denver when cameras caught him interacting with Broncos head coach Sean Payton after initially engaging with Broncos players.
"It was necessarily directed at him," Horn explained regarding Payton's involvement. Horn expressed his displeasure over Denver's aggressive play-calling late in their 28-14 victory over Carolina.
"They got the right to win... But you know I'm allowed my opinion on that too," Horn noted expressing feelings of disrespect from such plays despite successful defensive stands by Carolina.
