The 151st Kentucky Derby, one of the most prestigious events in the sporting calendar, took center stage at Churchill Downs this weekend. Among the array of prominent sports figures present was Carolina Panthers wide receiver, Xavier Legette, a known aficionado of horses. Legette, now entering his second season with the Panthers, has established a reputation for his love of equestrian pursuits, alongside a performance that has endeared him to fans.
In response to his evident passion, the NFL selected Legette as a social correspondent for the Derby. The Mullins, South Carolina native, quickly engaged with the crowd and media, including a meeting with ESPN’s Marty Smith. The discussion touched on Legette’s familial ties to horses, his growth in the NFL with guidance from Adam Thielen, and his developing relationship with Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.
Of his teammate Young, Legette remarked, “He a great person, and I think what kept him on the high horse is he plays with a lot of grit. I think he’s a guy with a whole lot of grit. I don’t think too much of anything can bring him down.”
The Panthers recently bolstered their squad with the addition of Tetairoa McMillan, their No. 8 overall draft pick in 2025. Legette expressed optimism about their potential synergy on the field, stating, “He a guy that can go high-point the ball, and to me I think he can do a little bit of everything. And with me and him on the field at the same time, I think it’ll be a little hard to guard that.”
Legette was also seen indulging in the unique offerings of the Derby, such as 24K gold bacon, which he considered sending back to his hometown. Known for his culinary quirk, Legette previously introduced raccoon to his teammates, a move that caught the attention of celebrity chef Guy Fieri, though Legette kept the recipe secret.
Fashion at the Kentucky Derby often garners attention, and Legette’s attire combined his country roots with contemporary style, aligning with the event’s glamorous atmosphere.
