Demetrius Knight, a linebacker for the South Carolina Gamecocks, recently reflected on the draft process during his pro day. Citing the experience of Xavier Legette, a former teammate now with the Carolina Panthers, Knight emphasized caution in revealing too much about team interests ahead of the draft.
Legette’s draft journey acted as a lesson for many. Reflecting on last year’s Senior Bowl, he mentioned the Panthers’ keen interest in him. “We had three days we had to meet with teams and each day I had to meet with the Panthers,” Legette recounted. Before the draft, he had shared details about this relationship: “They’re really hoping that I can make it to the second round. They keep on telling me if I’m sitting at (pick) 33, they’re going to take me.”
Ultimately, the Panthers traded into the first round to secure Legette at the 32nd overall pick. Reflecting on the experience, coach Dave Canales humorously remarked, “You didn’t have to go tell the whole world we’re going to do it though, the other day.”
For prospects like Knight, the takeaway is clear. “I’m glad they came through because that would have been bad, but they came through for him,” Knight said, opting instead to remain silent on draft speculations, focusing instead on direct feedback from teams.
The Panthers are currently preparing for the upcoming draft, holding their strategies close while expressing openness to trade discussions. “I think we’re going to be open to all possibilities,” stated general manager Dan Morgan, emphasizing flexibility with their number 8 pick.
