FEMA Ranks Charlotte Among Top U.S. Cities for Flood Risk Management

Announcement

City of Charlotte issued the following announcement on Sept. 29.

Protecting property with flood insurance is about to become a lot more affordable for residents across the City of Charlotte thanks to the efforts and leadership of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2021, the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) will recognize Charlotte as a Class 3 community in its Community Rating System (CRS). This rating is in response to Storm Water Services’ many efforts to protect the public from the risks of flooding, including communicating flood safety information, providing floodplain mapping resources (view the 3D interactive floodzone map) and offering alert systems such as the Flood Information Notification System.

About the CRS Class 3 Rating

  • CRS recognizes and encourages floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • A Class 3 rating represents a 35 percent discount on flood insurance for all Charlotte properties.
  • This discounted rate will save residents nearly $1 million on flood insurance costs annually.
  • Charlotte is the top-rated city in the state and in the top 1 percent nationwide of the communities participating in the CRS program.
  • CRS is a voluntary program with more than 95 participating communities in the state and more than 1,500 nationwide.
How to purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program

Flooding is the costliest natural disaster in our area. Traditional homeowner and renter insurance policies do not cover flooding, which is why it is important to have flood insurance. Residents can purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program even if they don’t live in a floodplain. Please remember, there is typically a 30-day waiting period after you purchase. Learn more at Floodsmart.gov.
