Charlotte 49ers freshman javelin thrower Elizabeth Bailey participated in today's USATF U20 Outdoor Championships but will have to wait to see if she has earned a spot in the U20 World Championships.
Based on her season's best performance, she is eligible for the World U20 team and will find out officially on July 18.
Bailey surpassed the qualifying mark for the U20 Worlds with her school-record breaking throw of 51.09m to finish second at the Conference USA Championships.
She placed seventh at USATF U20 championships. The top two finishers, however, did not post a qualifying mark. They have until July 18 to do so.
The 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships will be held in Cali, Colombia, August 1-6, 2022.
Bailey could become the second 49ers student-athlete to qualify for the U20 World Championships. High jumper Trey McRae qualified for the 2012 championships, held in Barcelona, Spain. A five-time NCAA All-America, McRae went on to finish fifth in the high jump at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
